ale victual brewed alcoholic beverage containing malt and hops, similar to but heavier than beer, often served warmer than its lighter cousin at room temperature, though many (especially along the Olni and Vosk rivers) prefer it chilled. Ale usually has a higher alcholic content than beer, and tends to be darker in color. Served in tankards or horns, it is one of the two favored drinks of the Torvaldslanders (the other being mead), but is popular everywhere on both Gor and Earth
The Forkbeard himself now, from a wooden keg, poured a great tankard of ale, which must have been of the measure of five gallons. Over this he then closed his fist. It was the sign of the hammer, the sign of Thor. The tankard then, with two great bronze handles, was passed from hands to hands among the rowers. The men threw back their heads and, the liquid spilling down their bodies, drankale. It was the victory ale.
